Carla still runs, she just runs slowly. She still competes but finishes in the back of the pack. She claims that is fine and that it is “ok just to be out there”.
Carla is a museum educator in Washington DC. The Heisman Club continues to be a focus in her enthusiasm for Oberlin. After her tenure as president, she agreed to hang around and contribute to the club’s efforts. The club has enabled her to forge deep friendships with Obies of other classes and keeps her in close contact with the amazing Natalie Winkelfoos.
Memories of Oberlin are fuzzy. However, she will never forget the the commitment made by Dick Michaels and the men of the cross country and track teams to women’s athletics.
“I used to think what made me an athlete happened in the 4 years at Oberlin. Now I think what makes me an athlete is a state of mind that stays with me: a dedication to strive.”
