Heisman Club Announces 2016 Hall of Fame Class

Oberlin, Ohio – The Heisman Club of Oberlin College will officially induct four new members into its hall of fame on Friday, September 23, to begin Homecoming Weekend.
 
The class of Thomas B. Geiger Jr. '76, Toju Omatete '90, Shannon Houlihan '04 and Don Hunsinger (Coach/Administrator/Professor) will be the first to be enshrined in the newly renovated hall of fame. The ceremony will take place in the Austin E. About the Heisman Club Hall of Fame Class of 2016
 
Thomas B. Geiger Jr. – Class of 1976

Thomas Geiger, Jr., was a four-year letterman and two-time team captain of the Oberlin College swimming and diving team. The crowning moment of his career came as a senior, when he earned All-America honors in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a ninth-place finish.
 
A former school record-holder in the 500-, 1,000- and, 1,650-yard freestyle events, Geiger was a Great Lakes Athletic Conference champion in the 1,000- and 500-yard events in 1974. Throughout all four years of his career he placed in the top six in the 500, 1,650 and 800-yard free relay at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship meet (1973-76).
 
Toju Omatete – Class of 1990

A 14-time All-NCAC performer, Toju Omatete is one of the most decorated track and field athletes in Oberlin College history.

He broke onto the scene as a freshman in 1987, winning the 400-meter dash at the NCAC Outdoor Championship meet in what was then a school-record time of 50.07. He would claim his second NCAC crown at the 1989 indoor championships, covering 44-03 in the triple jump.

In just three years, Omatete was a seven-time All-NCAC selection indoors and added seven more all-conference performances on the outdoor track. When his career ended he held the school record in the triple jump indoors (44-11.75), and the 400 meters and 4x400 relay outdoors.

Shannon Houlihan – Class of 2004
 
A 19-time All-NCAC selection and five-time North Coast Athletic Conference champion, Shannon Houlihan is one of the most accomplished track and field athletes to don the crimson and gold.
 
She won the triple jump crown at the NCAC Indoor Championships in each of her four years, claiming NCAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors as a senior in 2004. At the meet she qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump with a mark of 36-07.75 and also turned in a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (9.02) and was a member of the second-place 4x200-meter relay (1:48.61).
 
In her first-year on campus, Houlihan set a then NCAC record in the triple jump by covering 36-11 to earn a trip to nationals. It stood as an Oberlin school record until February 13, 2016 when current junior Annie Goodridge bested her mark.
 
A two-time national qualifier, Houlihan concluded her career by earning her fifth NCAC title, winning the outdoor triple jump (35-04).

Houlihan was also a three-time letter-winner in field hockey (2001-2003) and served as team captain during her senior season. She helped the team secure 31 victories during her tenure with the Yeowomen.
 
Don Hunsinger – Coach/ Administrator / Professor
 
Don Hunsinger served Oberlin College as a coach, teacher and administrator for 32 years (1970-72, 1978-2008).
 
During his tenure, he was the head coach of football (12 seasons), men's tennis (19 seasons), women's tennis (13 seasons) and baseball (5 seasons) and also worked as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's basketball teams.
 
As a head coach, Hunsinger amassed 435 wins and was named NCAC Coach of the Year four times.  He mentored eight All-Americans and coached 14 Heisman Club Hall of Fame inductees.
 
Hunsinger served as the director of athletics and physical education from 1983-to 1984 and from 1990 to1994. Instrumental in forming the Heisman Club and the North Coast Athletic Conference, he still serves the conference as director of tennis and assists in the administration of the conference's swimming & diving championships.
 
Hunsinger is a member of the Lorain County Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Ohio Tennis Hall of Fame, Elyria High School Hall of Fame and the Boardman High School Hall of Fame. In 2009, the North Coast Athletic Conference named its male student-athlete of the year award the Don Hunsinger Award in his honor.
