Cross Country Lends a Hand in the Oberlin Community

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Oberlin College cross country teams took the week off of competition, but kept busy, joining with the men's and women's track and field squads to host a day of service at local George Jones Memorial Farm.

In total, over 70 Oberlin College cross country and track and field student-athletes along side four coaches, were on hand this past Saturday to help the non-profit farm and education center prepare the grounds for their annual Hootenanny that evening. The George Jones Memorial Farm is owned by the College and operated by the New Agrarian Center, an NPO that partners with local farms

The crew of Yeomen and Yeowomen volunteered their time weeding, watering flowerbeds and veggie patches, setting up tables and chairs, gathering firewood and helping maintain trails through the woods in preparation for the night's festivities.

The Hootenanny serves as a fundraiser for the farm and features live music, tractor rides, a bon fire, and down-home food and games. The annual shindig also serves as a fun way to engage to the Oberlin community and welcome the fall season together with family and friends.

While the 2015-16 track and field season is far off in the distance, the Oberlin harriers have spent the week gearing up for their greatest challenge yet, the All-Ohio Championships on Friday, October 2.

Oberlin cross country will travel to Cedarville, Ohio and Cedarville University to battle with competitors from all NCAA Divisions throughout Ohio.

The first gun goes off at 2 p.m.
