"This was a great experience for our team," Head Coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. "I thought we played pretty well against superior competition and hopefully we can translate some the things we learned as we move back into conference play."
After nearly six minutes of action, the Yeomen and Big Red were tied 8-8. Cornell grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game on a pair of Devin Cherry free throws at the 9:41 mark to make it 20-10.
A fastbreak layup by Cherry extend the Cornell lead out to 15, 37-22, with 4:15 remaining in the half, but Oberlin fought back to get within nine with 50 seconds to go. The 7-1 Yeomen spurt featured two free throw makes from both Simpson and
Jack Poyle and a 3-pointer from Lewis. Cornell would add one more free throw before the break to take a 39-29 cushion into the intermission.
After getting within six early in the second half, the Yeomen found themselves down by just 10, 55-45, with 11:37 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the next six minutes were unkind to the Yeomen as Cornell went on a 12-4 run to extend their advantage to 18 with 5:26 left to play and effectively put the game out of reach for the Yeomen.
Ned Tomic led the Big Red with 20 points off the bench as he was 9-of-13 shooting. Cornell, a member of the IVY League, snapped their nation-leading 19-game losing streak dating back to last year. The Big Red is now 1-13 on the season.
Oberlin concluded its five-game road trip at 2-3 and is now 4-9 on the year. The Yeomen, who are 1-5 in conference play, have nothing but NCAC games remaining the rest of the way. Their first test will be on Wednesday night when Allegheny comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
