Lorain, Ohio – Forced to play at nearby Fox Creek Country Club due to inclement weather, the Oberlin College women's tennis got off to slow a start in the unfamiliar venue and was unable to recover as it fell to Kenyon College, 5-2, in the third-place match of the NCAC Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

“We didn't do a very good job of controlling our emotions from the onset and that really cost us,” Head Coach Constantine Ananiadis said. “We dug ourselves a huge a whole in doubles, but I was proud of the way we came back in singles to make Kenyon earn the match.”

The Ladies took all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. A day after winning a thrilling match against the top pairing from NCAC Champion DePauw, senior Farah Leclercq and sophomore Grace Porter were unable to keep pace with Amy Schlessman and Taylor Diffley in an 8-1 setback. The Yeowomen also fell 8-3 at No. 2 and 8-4 at No. 3.

Oberlin tried to crawl its way back into the match in singles play as Leclercq, who is ranked ninth in the ITA Central, bested 13th-ranked Schlessman 6-0, 6-2.  Fighting through injury, junior Brenna Sheldon also earned a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 win over Diffley in the second flight. Unfortunately, those victories proved to be Oberlin's only two points of the match.

Porter battled with Amanda Polster at No. 3, but ultimately fell short in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Playing in her final conference tournament, senior Preeya Shah tried to extend the match as she pushed Lydia Winkler to the brink at No. 4. The Oberlin upperclassmen won the first set 6-2, but Winkler clinched the match for the Ladies by winning the next two sets 6-3, 7-5. Shah ends her career with all-time record of 58-52 in singles, which included a 22-7 mark as a junior. In doubles she was 59-43 over four years.

With the loss Oberlin concluded its season at 17-8 overall. Leclercq and Porter will now wait to hear from the NCAA Selection Committee to see if they will be invited to compete in the national tournament.
