Women’s Tennis Wins Ninth Straight Match

Preeya Shah secured the fifth point for Oberlin.

Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine in a row and improved to 14-4 overall after handing the College of Wooster Fighting Scots an, 8-1, loss on Wednesday evening.

The Yeowomen, who were forced to shuffle their lineup tonight without Grace Porter, did not miss a beat.

“We were really sharp today, especially in doubles,” Head Coach Constantine Ananiadis said. “I was really happy with our energy and competitiveness. Wooster played hard and gave us a great match, really challenging us at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. I felt they were a much improved team.”

Junior Brenna Sheldon and senior Preeya Shah played at No. 1 doubles and were 8-0 winners.

In fact all three Oberlin doubles teams won fairly easily. Normally the No. 3 pairing, rookies Ariana Abayomi and Erin Johnson were 8-2 winners at No. 2 over Lauren Gilliss and Rose Chimento.  In the third position, senior Farah Leclercq partnered with Emily Fuller to beat Rachel Dietz and Rachel Appelton by an 8-1 count.

The match started outdoors, but was eventually moved inside where all of the singles matches took place. At No. 1, Leclercq was challenged by CC Christian in the second set, but the Oberlin ace was able to hang on for a 7-5 win after taking the first 6-1.

Sheldon provided Oberlin's fourth point, as she was first to finish after not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Chimento. It was her seventh win a row and ninth in her last 10 matches.

Shah clinched the match at No. 3 singles as she took care of Melanie Chin 6-1, 6-0.

Johnson moved up one spot from her normal fifth position, but easily defeated Dietz 6-0, 6-1 at four.

First-year Alex Kahn made just her third appearance of the spring at No. 5 and earned her third-career win with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Kim Carter.

Oberlin has a busy weekend ahead as it host Denison on Friday at 5:30 p.m., before welcoming Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday for 1 p.m. tilt.
