Greencastle, Ind. – The Oberlin College women's tennis team failed to keep up with No. 8 DePauw University on Friday night, as the Yeowomen fell to the Tigers, 8-1.
“We have a lot to learn and it's the reason we schedule these tough teams early in the season: in order to learn more about ourselves and about competing,” head coach
Constantine Ananiadis said.
The Yeowomen's lone winning match came in second singles when junior
Brenna Sheldon won in commanding fashion, 6-1, 6-2.
DePauw's first doubles team of Claire Marshall and Megan Crowley came into the season ranked as the best duo in the country. However, Oberlin's team of senior
Farah Leclercq and sophomore
Grace Porter battled hard against the nation's top doubles team, before ultimately coming up short by the score of 8-6.
“DePauw is a great team, but I was disappointed with how we competed tonight,” Ananiadis said. “I'm sure this group will rebound and play tougher tomorrow.”
Oberlin will continue its play at DePauw on March 9 when they take on the University of Chicago in a neutral match. Play is set to begin at 11 a.m.
