Hilton Head, S.C. - The Oberlin College women's tennis team won its first two matches of its spring trip on Monday, beginning with a 6-3 victory over regionally-ranked Carleton College followed with a 9-0 shutout against Virginia Wesleyan College in the afternoon.
In the morning match, Oberlin took on a Carleton squad that is ranked seventh in the ITA Central region.
"This was a great team effort by our team and one of our best wins we've had since I arrived here," head coach
Constantine Ananiadis said. "Carleton is a very good team, they are very well-coached, and they compete well."

Brenna Sheldon won Oberlin's first match of the day, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles and tied the running tally at 1-1.
The Yeowomen went up 2-1 on the day by rounding out doubles play with a victory at No. 1, as senior

Grace Porter took the match by the score of 8-5.
At the beginning of singles, the Knights tied the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 6. Oberlin responded with a victory from Sheldon in second singles, 6-2, 7-5, to put the Yeowomen back up, 3-2, in the match.
The Yeowomen added to their lead when first-year
Erin Johnson won a battle in fifth singles, 6-4, 7-6, and 11-9 in the tie break. The ITA Central region's eighth-ranked Oberlin clinched the win after a 7-5, 6-4 victory in No. 1 singles by the Leclercq who currently ranks seventh in the region.
"Erin did a fantastic job keeping her head and saving a match-point in the super breaker and Farah also beat one of the best players in the region very convincingly to clinched the match for us," Ananiadis said.
Oberlin earned its sixth win of the morning when Porter won, 7-5, 6-3, in third singles and ultimately ended the match with the score 6-3 in favor of the Yeowomen.
In the second match of the day, Oberlin rolled to a 9-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan which included three wins by default due to an injured Marlin group.
The Yeowomen began the match by taking first and second doubles. The team of Shah and Sheldon earned Oberlin's first win of the match after a commanding victory at No. 1, 8-1. The second win of the afternoon came at the hands of first-years Johnson and
Ariana Abayomi by the score of 8-4.

Shah earned her second win of the match in third singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Porter clinched the victory for the Yeowomen when she also won in second singles by the scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Leclercq earned her fourth win of the day when she took first singles, 6-2, 6-1, as Abayomi won in fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Oberlin earned its eighth and ninth victories in the match as Fuller and Kahn won by default in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
The Yeowomen will finish out their spring trip in Hilton Head, S.C., when they take on St. Olaf College at 11:30 a.m. on March 28.
