Women’s Tennis Concludes Perfect Weekend

Grace Porter won at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin, Ohio – The regionally ranked Oberlin College women's tennis team proved to be too strong for the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks as the Yeowomen earned a 7-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Heisman Field House.

The Yeowomen set the tone right from the start by winning all three doubles matches rather easily. Farah Leclercq and Grace Porter registered their eighth win of the season with an 8-0 victory at No. 1. Brenna Sheldon and Preeya Shah were 8-1 winners at No. 2, while the rookie duo of Erin Johnson and Ariana Abayomi added an 8-3 triumph at No. 3.

With a 3-0 lead in hand, Oberlin eventually clinched the match thanks to Grace Porter's 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Ana Stein at No. 2 singles.

Preceding Porter's victory, was Leclercq's 6-0, 6-1 dismantling of Catherine Engel at the top spot.

After playing four out of the last five matches in the No. 4 position, senior Preeya Shah moved up a spot to three where she was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Tracy Gibson.

Normally, Oberlin's No. 6 player, Abayomi moved up to the fourth position for just the second time of her career and downed Kyle Couseneau 6-1, 6-1.

Head Coach Constantine Ananiadis elected to rest Sheldon and Johnson in singles in order to insert sophomore Emily Fuller and first-year Alex Kahn in spots five and six, respectively. Unfortunately, both players were bested by their JCU counterparts.

"We had a very good weekend of tennis, beating two quality opponents fairly comfortably.” Coach Ananiadis said. “Our doubles play is really coming along nicely and the girls are gaining confidence every time they step onto the court. It was also nice to be able to give Emily and Alexandra a very well-deserved opportunity to play in the line-up and grow their games."

Oberlin, which also beat Ohio Northern on Friday by a 7-2 count, improved to 7-4 on the season. The Yeowomen's next match will be on March 25 against Carleton in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
