Delaware, Ohio – An early morning road match at Ohio Wesleyan University proved to be no problem for the Oberlin College men's tennis team as it downed the Bishops 7-2 inside the Gordon Field House.
The Yeomen were certainly ready to play from the get go as they established the tone early in the match by winning all three battles in doubles play.
Charlie Marks and
Ben Turchin upended Richie Karban and John Rissell in the top spot by an 8-4 final.
Callan Louis and
Soren Zeliger were 8-2 winners at No. 2 as well
Eliot Heaton and
Eli Rogatz at No. 3.
“I have been stressing to the guys how important it is to start fast and secure some points early in doubles play and they really responded to that today,” Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. “It takes some of the pressure off when you enter singles with the lead and you saw that in the way the guys played.”
At No. 1 singles Marks dropped the first set to Will Thieman 6-1, but some mid-match adjustments allowed him to secure a 6-4 win in the second. In the third, Marks displayed both his physical and mental toughness by earning a 7-6 win after securing an 11-9 victory in the tiebreak.
Rookie standout
Callan Louis extended his winning streak out to six dating back to the fall as he turned in a convincing 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Rissell at No. 3 singles. Fellow rookie
Brandon McKenna was moved up from six to five after a late scratch of Heaton. However, he was not fazed as he eventually outlasted Brad Turnwald by winning the second set 7-5 and the third 11-9 after falling 6-0 in the first.
At No. 4 Zeliger recorded his third straight win by dispatching Conor Breen in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Oberlin is back in action on Thursday night when it plays host to the University of Mount Union at 6:30 p.m.
