Yeowomen Dispatch Otterbein, 8-1

Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – In a match that lasted 5:30, the Oberlin College women's tennis team eventually sent the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals back home with an 8-1 loss. With the win the Yeowomen improved to 4-1 on the early season.

The Yeowomen set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches. Farah Leclercq and Grace Porter were 8-4 winners in the top spot as were Preeya Shah and Brenna Sheldon at No. 2. However, at No. 3 the rookie Yeowomen tandem of Erin Johnson and Ariana Abayomi were pushed to the brink before gutting out a 9-8 win.

Leclercq was upset by Julie Stroyne in the No. 1 singles match, but her teammates had her back as the Yeowomen would not drop a single set the rest of the way through. At No. 2 Brenna Sheldon turned in a masterful blanking of Sammi Kruger, winning both sets by a 6-0 margin.

Shah was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 3, while porter followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Emma Krummel in the fourth slot. Johnson matched the score line of Porter as she took down Megan Locke 6-1, 6-3.

In a match that seemed like it would never come to an end, Abayomi finally outlasted Adrien Leatherwood having to go to tiebreaks in both sets to do so. She was a 7-6 (7-5) winner in the first and grinded out a 7-6 (11-9) triumph in the second to earn the win.

Oberlin returns to action on Friday, February 22 when it host local rival Case Western Reserve at 4:30 p.m.
