Westlake, Ohio - Four Oberlin College women's lacrosse players earned All-NCAC honors, while first-year Head Coach Jacqueline McDevitt was named as the NCAC Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday.
Headlining the list of honorees was All-NCAC First-Team Selection Madeleine O'Meara. The junior goalie from Cranbury, New Jersey, led the NCAC with an 8.79 goals against average and finished with 106 total saves on the season. O'Meara played nearly every minute of the season in goal and started all 16 games. She held the opposition to eight goals or less in 10 of the 16 games.
Junior
Ilyssa Meyer, who led the Yeowomen attack with 44 goals this season, was named to the All-NCAC Second-Team. The Marlboro, New Jersey, native scored three or more goals in a game eight times – including a career-high six in a 12-10 win at North Central College on March 29. She added six assists to her 44 scores to finish with a team-high 50 points. Meyer, who scored the most goals of any member on the second team, also earned honorable-mention honors last spring.
Rookie sensations
Kate Hanick and
Jodi Helsel rounded out the list of award winners as All-NCAC Honorable-Mention selections. Hanick quickly became an elite force the Oberlin offense, scoring six goals in first collegiate game. The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, product finished the year with 39 goals and added a team-high 10 assists. Hanick also scooped up a team-high 46 ground balls and tied
Lori Sako with a team-best 38 draw controls.
Helsel helped out O'Meara on the defensive side of things, as she became a nuisance to opposing foes. The San Diego, California, native tied for second on the team with 13 caused turnovers to go along with 28 grounders. She also added two goals and one assist on the year.
McDevitt, who becomes Oberlin's first Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year since Mindy Manolovich won the award in 1997, guided the Yeowomen to an 11-5 record, which marks the most wins in a season since 1998 when the team finished 11-4. Furthermore, she guided the team to its first NCAC win since 2007. The team also finished second in the league with just an 8.81 goals against average.
The good news for McDevitt as she enters her second season at the helm is that all four of her All-NCAC selections will be returning in 2013.
