Yeomen Split Again

Game One Box l Game Two Box l Stats From the Trip (8 Games)

Mesa, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team pounded out a season-high 16 hits in game two en route to a 12-1 victory against Thomas College (Maine) on Tuesday afternoon at Gene Autry Park. However, the Yeomen did drop game one, 7-4, to earn their fourth straight split.

Sophomore Mattie DeDoes led the way offensively as he went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBI's. Zach Jaspers, Eric Knight, Zach Kisley and Kevin Verne all had two hits in the rout as well.

Junior Kevin Swanson improved to 3-0 on the bump this season and won his second start of the trip. The right-hander worked six innings and allowed just five hits and one unearned run. He struck out four and walked just one on 92 pitches of work.

The Yeomen scored two runs in the first on RBI singles by Knight and DeDoes. In the second inning, Oberlin jumped on the Terriers with seven runs in the frame as they sent 11 men to plate. The big hit of the rally came courtesy of DeDoes as his triple to the gap in right center scored two.

Oberlin added a single tally in the third and two more in the sixth to cap the game's scoring. Knight provided a sac fly in the third and Kevin Verne and DeDoes had run-producing hits in the sixth.

In game one, the Yeomen trailed 3-2 after three innings of play. However, they would gain the lead in the top of the fourth inning on Ben Whitener's two-run single that found some pasture in left center field.

Unfortunately, things unraveled in the home-half of the fourth for Oberlin starter Jason James. Three hit batters, two hits and an error in the inning resulted in four Terrier runs. James was chased from the game after hitting his third batter of the inning, giving way to Mike McDonald who gave up both hits in the frame. From there both teams went scoreless the rest of the way.

Rookie Andrew Hutson joined Whitener as those with two hits in the game.

Oberlin returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader tomorrow against Middlebury.
