Men’s Tennis 2012 Spring Season Preview

Logan Chun comes into the season as the Yeomen's No. 1.
Oberlin, Ohio - Head Coach Adam Shoemaker and the Oberlin men's tennis team come into the 2012 spring season ready to continue their improvement that they have shown over the past three years.

Shoemaker is excited for his team, which returns four players in their top six from a year ago. They will be led by senior captains Sam Towne and Joe Leffler, both of whom were named as ITA Scholar-Athletes for their work on the court and in the classroom last year.

Joining the seniors will be second-year players Charlie Marks and Logan Chun, each of which earned All-NCAC accolades following their rookie seasons. Chun, who garnered second-team honors, finished the season 13-12 overall and was 11-10 in dual matches at the No. 1 position. He was also a part of 11 doubles wins on the year. Marks, an honorable-mention recipient, finished the season with eight wins while playing mostly at No. 2 singles. He also added five wins in doubles play, which included two victories in the top spot at the conference tournament.

The Yeomen welcome back junior Ben Turchin who missed most of last season. A consistent force in the lineup during the 2009-10 season, Turchin excelled in doubles play were he was part of nine wins. Additionally he added six wins in singles action.

Freshmen Soren Zeliger had an impressive collegiate debut in the fall season, racking up two singles wins and two doubles victories during Oberlin's own fall invite. Recent roster addition Daniel Bloch completes the Yeomen lineup.

The Yeomen have a tough schedule this year, playing three Division III qualifiers from last year, and several more regionally ranked teams. Shoemaker feels that his team is prepared for the challenge, and is happy with his team's competitiveness. His players have been able to push each other to get better every day in practice, and he is hopeful that it will translate into their matches.

The Yeomen, who were named as an ITA All-Academic Team in 2011, begin their season this Saturday when they play host to Malone University at 1 p.m.
