Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team turned in a dominating performance as they downed the visiting Scots of Wooster, 58-40, on Friday night at Philips Gym.
Allison Gannon turned in her second straight double-double performance with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also added a team-high three blocks. Freshman sensation
Christina Marquette continued to impress with 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high six steals.
Lillian Jahan added 10 points and three steals, while sophomore classmate
Malisa Hoak continued to display her distribution skills with a game-high seven assists to go along with seven points and three takeaways.
Wooster led 4-2 2:30 into the game, but Oberlin's stiff defense would hold the Scots scoreless for the next seven minutes en route to building up a 19-4 lead. A Marquette layup with 3:33 to play in the opening half gave the Yeowomen their first 20-point lead of the game at 33-13. OC would eventually take a 37-17 cushion into the locker room.
In the second half the Scots never really threatened as Oberlin built its lead up to 24 on two separate occasions and never looked back.
While Oberlin did not have its best shooting night at 29.2-percent (19-of-65), the Yeowomen did make the most of their opportunities at the free throw line where they cashed in 18-of-21 attempts for an 85.7-percent success rate. On the flip side, Oberlin held Wooster to 30-percent (15-of-50) shooting, which included an 0-of-11 effort from beyond the arc.
The Yeowomen also dominated the glass - matching a season-high with 50 rebounds - 21 of which came on the offensive end. The Yeowomen defense also forced Wooster to commit 25 turnovers – marking the most of any Oberlin opponent all season long. OC translated those miscues into 18 points.
Oberlin won the other hustle stats as well with a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint and 12-0 advantage in fast-break points.
With the win Oberlin improved to 6-15 overall and 3-9 in the NCAC, while the Scots fell to 3-16 and 2-9 in the NCAC.
Oberlin won't have much time to celebrate as it welcomes Ohio Wesleyan University to Philips Gym tomorrow afternoon. Tip-time is set for 5 p.m.
