Terre Haute, IN – The Oberlin College women's cross country team ended its amazing season in grand fashion, finishing ninth at the NCAA Championship Meet on Saturday afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Course.
“It was just another amazing group effort by these young women,” Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said. “For three sophomores to carry us like they have all year for the most part is truly outstanding and it means the future is bright for this team.”
As a team the Yeowomen totaled 316 points. The ninth-place finish marks the highest in school history, besting last year's 15th-place showing. Furthermore, the Yeowomen recorded the best finish out of any school from the Great Lakes Region.
Leading the way for the Yeowomen was the school's newest All-American
Carey Lyons. The Tacoma, Washington, native placed 35th overall with a time 21:58.8. Those who finish within the top 35 earn All-America distinction.
The second Oberlin runner to complete the 6K trek was
Emma Lehmann who finished 42nd overall with a timestamp of 22:11.3.
Completing the Oberlin trio of sensational sophomores was Lindsay Neal as she checked in 63rd at 22:30.3.
Oberlin's fourth finisher was a runner who improved dramatically as the season wore on in junior
Lauren Taylor. She finished 133rd in the 263-runner field with a mark of 23:00.0.
Senior
Caroline Martin ended her cross country career as the team's final placer at the meet. Her time of 23:20.4 was good for 182nd place.
Also running the Yeowomen was sophomore
Sarah Jane Kerwin who ended in 207th place as she came through the chute in 23:32.8.
All six of these women will play vital roles in both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
