Oberlin, Ohio - Behind an all-around great team effort, the Oberlin College women's basketball team was able to knock off the visiting Tigers of Wittenberg, 73-56, on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
All five starters had outstanding days for the Yeowomen as
Kelly Warlich led the way with a career-high 23 points, and added 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. Freshman
Christina Marquette added 16 points and 12 boards in the winning effort. Sophomore
Malisa Hoak netted 12 points and added eight assists in the game, compared to only three turnovers.
Allison Gannon was the other double-figure scorer with 11 points.
The Yeowomen came out strong in the first half, holding Wittenberg to just 18 points. Hoak was in the giving mood as she dished out five assists in the first half, with no turnovers. Warlich led the offensive attack for the Yeowomen with nine points and five boards. Marquette added eight points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Wittenberg's only lead of the half came when they went up by a score of 2-0. Oberlin was able to hold Wittenberg to 18 points, and they were just 7-of-32 from the floor in the first half. However, the Yeowomen were 14-of-25, and led by a score of 34-18 going into the second period.
The Yeowomen kept their intensity high throughout the second half and held off any run that the Tigers tried to put together. Their lead never went below 16 points, and had their largest lead of the night of 28 points at the 15:07 mark.
On the night, the Yeowomen shot 51% from the field (25-for-49) and were 5-of-12 from behind the 3-point line. They out-rebounded Wittenberg 37-36, and added 20 assists compared to 19 turnovers. Oberlin had 12 fast break points, compared to Wittenberg's zero, and outscored the Tigers 34-24 in the paint.
Head coach
Kerry Jenkins and the Yeowomen have now beat the Tigers at Philips Gym for the second year in a row. They head to Hiram for their next game. The NCAC game will start at 7:30 p.m. on January 31st.
