Women’s Lacrosse Names Captains for Upcoming Season

Junior Madeleine O’Meara (55) and Senior Alice Zicht (7) are two of the four captains for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin, Ohio – First-year Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Jacqueline McDevitt named four captains for the upcoming 2012 season, with one coming from each grade level.

Alice Zicht headlines the foursome as the senior representative, while goalie Madeleine O'Meara represents the juniors. After an impressive rookie season in 2011, Phoebe Hammer leads the sophomore unit, while two-sport standout Kate Hanick will represent the first-years.

"I am more than excited about this group of captains that was selected by our team and coaching staff,” McDevitt said. “I believe we have a great mix of experience, passion and commitment within these four talented women. Each one of them adds a different dynamic to the championship culture we are building here at Oberlin. Their drive for academic and athletic success will help lead our team in attaining our goals this season and in the years to come.”

Zicht, a three-year starter who has amassed 56 career goals in 42 games, is coming off a season in which scored 17 goals and led the team with 49 draw controls en route to finishing second in the NCAC with 3.77 draws per game, which also ranked 46th in the nation. A 2010 All-NCAC Honorable Mention selection, Zicht scored a career-high 26 goals in that season.  McDevitt on Zicht, “Alice brings four years of competitive playing experience and is one of the most vocal players on the team. Her mentorship of our young team is exciting to have.”

After starting all 15 games as a rookie in 2010, O'Meara started in goal eight times last spring. She made 50 saves in over 429 minutes of work in the cage. However, as a rookie she turned away 167 shots and led the NCAC with 11.13 saves per game. This year she is moving out of the crease to a field position. McDevitt on O'Meara, “Maddie is a great example of what a liberal arts education paired with athletics means, her commitment to the team as a whole is unprecedented and her desire to get better every day is a standard for us. She is also the co-editor of the sports page for the school's newspaper.”

Hammer, who started all 13 games last season as a freshman, finished the season with seven goals and one assist. Furthermore, she was a perfect 4-of-4 on free-position attempts. Coach McDevitt will be looking for her to increase her role this spring. McDevitt on Hammer, “Representing a strong sophomore class, Hammer will live up to her name. Her approach to the game and her team is thoughtful and calculated; she brings calmness to the squad that will help us keep composure in big games. She is also on the SAAC board.”

Hanick got her first taste intercollegiate athletics in the fall as a member of the Oberlin women's soccer team. A Second-Team All Ches-Mont League selection as a senior at Kennett High School in Pennsylvania, Hanick is expected to come in and have an immediate impact for the Yeowomen.  McDevitt on Hanick, “Hanick brings a fire and drive to lead this squad for many years to come. Although only just a freshman, Hanick has the knack for finding what works for the team and her confidence is something that will be contagious."

The Yeowomen kickoff their season on March 10 at Otterbein.
