Oberlin, Ohio – For the 16th straight season, the Calvin College Knights won the Great Lakes Regional Championship, doing in so commanding fashion. The host Yeomen also turned in a great race, finishing ninth overall.
Meet Overview
Calvin College had five runners finish in the top 12 as they won today's Great Lakes Regional Championship in dominating fashion with just 38 points. Dan Kerr was the team's top finisher, completing the 8K trek in 24:47.17 to place third overall.
Just a few spots back in fifth place was Matt Vander Roest as he stopped the clock at 24:52.53. Greg Whittle rounded out the top three for the victors, ending eighth overall in 25:03.62.
Finishing second in the race was Wabash College out of the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Little Giants, who totaled 100 points as team, were led by Kevin McCarthy's first-place finish with a time of 24:31.01. The senior averaged just 4:56 per mile.
Brian David finished 11th overall at 25:11.58 while Dalton Boyer followed in 17th with a timestamp of 25:33.57 to round out the Little Giants' top three.
Dee Salukombo of Denison University finished second overall in 24:44.61.
The top 35 finishers in the race were named All-Region at meet's end.
Oberlin Focus
The Yeomen of Oberlin were simply sensational on their home course, totaling 279 points to finish ninth overall despite not being ranked within the top 10 of the region all season long.
Senior
Stephen Williams earned All-Region honors by placing 26th overall to lead the Oberlin effort. On his last run through the Oberlin Woodchip trail, Williams finished in 25:54.16.
Classmate
Ben Schild was the next Yeoman to come through chute, doing so in 26:11.96 to finish in 41st place. He was followed closely behind by fellow senior
Derek Lange who was just two places back at 26:14.66.
Junior
Eric Line was 80th in the 243-runner field as he completed the course in 26:53.18. Sophomore
Jimmy Taylor rounded out the Yeomen placers in 94th with a mark of 27:11.89.
