Series Information ...
Oberlin trails the all-time series against the Scots 22-63-2 … Saturday marks the 88th meeting between the two foes with their first meeting coming all the way back in 1903 – a the Yeomen won 39-0 … The Yeomen last defeated the Scots in 2003 in a 14-7 thriller … In the 2009 match-up, although the Yeomen recorded a season high 351 yards of offense, the defense struggled giving up 515 yards of their own, while Wooster cruised to an easy 52-7 win … Running back
Adam Lowther was a lone bright spot for the Yeomen as he rushed for a career high 83 yards on 11 carries, to go along with his first career touchdown on a 40-yard scamper for the Yeomen's lone score … Quarterback
David Kalgren also had a career day passing with 162 yards, while also rushing for 73 yards on 13 carries.
Scouting the Scots…
The Scots are coming off of a narrow loss to Wabash College in their NCAC opener that saw them with the ball at the 50 yard line down by four points in the final minute of the game with a chance to upset the No. 22 Little Giants before a desperation pass on four down was intercepted to preserve the win for the Little Giants … Wooster is led offensively by freshman quarterback Richard Barnes who has the ability to both run and throw … Barnes' favorite targets include senior Mike Redick and junior Cameron Daniels, who already have 12 and 11 catches, respectively … Defensively, Wooster is led by a pair of linebackers in junior Matt Breidigam and freshman Quinn Hood … Breidigam has already racked up 17 tackles on the season including 12 solo tackles, while Hood has two interceptions in as many games.
Offensive Balance …
Redshirt sophomore quarterback
Josh Mandel became the first quarterback to throw for 300+ yards since Greg Mangan did it at Heidelberg in 2007 … His 335 yard effort is the sixth best single-game total in school history … The area of concern was Oberlin's inability to move the ball on the ground mustering only 43 yards in the run game … In order to take the pressure off of Mandel and the passing game, the Yeomen will need to move the ball more effectively on the ground … In last year's meeting against the Scots, the Yeomen racked up 189 on the ground and averaged 5.7 yards per carry.
Emerging Star …
Sophomore
Adam Niec turned in one of the most impressive performances by a Yeomen wideout in recent memory … Niec slowly became Mandel's favorite target catching 10 of Mandel's 25 completions for 93 yards and three scores … The 6-foot-2 Brecksville, Ohio native emerged as the consistent red zone threat the Yeomen have been looking for, earning himself NCAC Player of the Week in the process.
Comfortable on Defense …
Last year's starting quarterback for the Yeomen, sophomore
David Kalgren, has made the move back to the defensive side of the ball for the Yeomen … The Curwensville, Pa. native did not disappoint in his move back to defense as he racked up 7.5 tackles including 7 solo tackles as well as picking up his first collegiate interception … Fellow sophomore
C.J. Plyler also came back after taking last season off to make a key interception for the Yeomen …During a critical series in the second half,
Dane Stritt also came away with an INT in the end zone to end a potential scoring threat for the Lords.
Flipping the Field …
Junior punter
Cory Kidd picked up right where he left off last season by virtually flipping the field on the Lords on multiple occasions as he averaged 45 yards per punt in the opener … Of his five punts, four were downed inside the 20-yard … His long punt on the day was a 58 yard boot to the Kenyon 1 yard line in the second quarter … The Wellington, Ohio native, also plays wide receiver and caught three passes for 48 yards.
