Lexington, Ky. – The Oberlin College volleyball team earned the American Volley Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Oberlin was one of 75 Division III teams to be honored and was part of a record-setting year that saw a total of 450 teams being bestowed the prestigious recognition.

“I am proud of this honor as it shows how hard our team works in the classroom as well as on the court,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said.

The Yewomen are coming off an impressive 2009 campaign in which they set the school's wins record by going 15-16.

Oberlin kickoff its 2010 season on September 1 when it plays host to Ursuline College at 4 p.m.
