Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College Delta Lodge Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard has named Brett Nichols as the new head golf coach, effective immediately.

Nichols, who has been on staff for the past four years in various capacities, will continue to be to the Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach as well as the Special Assistant to Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Recruitment.

Longtime Head Men's Soccer Coach and previous Head Golf Coach Blake New will stay on staff as the assistant golf coach.

"Brett Nichols has demonstrated many of the characteristics we need to lead the golf program,” Karlgaard said. “He is a good recruiter, is well organized, and has an understanding of the game. Combined with Blake New's expertise as a former assistant golf pro, I am confident this combination of coaches will propel our program to success."

Nichols brings his expertise in recruiting to the golf program as he has successfully recruited athletes to Oberlin from a multitude of states that include: Connecticut, Arizona, California, Minnesota and Maine. As a successful recruiter for the men's basketball program, Nichols has also spent countless hours building high school athletics connections in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Southwest, Mountain West and New England regions.

While Nichols will bring his strong recruiting abilities to the golf program, he will also contribute almost 20 years of experience playing the game of golf. During that time, Nichols has played golf at various courses in more than fifteen states.

“I am really looking forward to this opportunity,” Nichols said. “Being a head coach at one of the most outstanding academic liberal arts colleges has been a goal of mine for some time, and I am excited to have this opportunity first at Oberlin. I am also thrilled to have Blake stay on staff and am looking forward to working with him next year. His experience as the head golf coach and as an assistant golf pro will remain a valuable asset to the program.”
