Westlake, Ohio – Four Oberlin College baseball players were honored by the North Coast Athletic Conference, the league office announced on Tuesday morning. Highlighting the honorees were All-NCAC First-Team selections
Ben Puterbaugh and
Phil Brua. Senior
Jack Dunn and junior
Brandon Cantrill garnered honorable-mention accolades.
Puterbaugh, a native of Canton, Ohio, put together one of the best seasons in school history, finishing fourth in the league in hitting (.459) while setting the school record for hits in a season (61).
A two-time NCAC Player of the Week selection, Puterbaugh also led the Yeomen in doubles (13), slugging (.602), RBI (31) and total bases (80). Moreover, the smooth fielding third baseman put together a school-record 19-game hitting steak, had 21 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI performances.
While helping Oberlin set the school record for wins in a season (18), he was featured in
Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd segment, named to the College Baseball Foundation's All-Star Line-up Team of the Week (April 6) and led the nation in hitting through April 11. His batting average was over .500 until the final four games of the season.
Brua, a product of nearby Avon, Ohio, was simply dominant on the mound this season as he set the school record for saves in a season (6) and tied the Oberlin mark for wins with a record of 6-3. His 2.78 ERA was third best in the league, while his opposition batting average of .227 tied for tops in the NCAC. The sidearm specialist recorded 8.18 strikeouts per nine innings. He totaled a team-high 55 innings, while making a school-record 22 appearances and racking up 50 punchouts along the way.
Cantrill was the main backstop for the Yeomen and finished second on the team with a .328 batting average. The Collins, Ohio, native led the team with four home runs and joined Puterbaugh as the only players to start all 37 games. He finished second on the team in hits (38) and slugging (.543). Furthermore, the fleet-footed catcher was also 7-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
Dunn, who finished his career as the school's all-time wins leader with 16, ended the season with a record of 2-3. He led the Yeomen in starts (10) and was second on the staff in strikeouts (25) and innings pitched (40.2).
The core of Puterbaugh, Brua and Cantrill will lead the Yeomen into what could be a promising 2011 season.
