Oberlin, Ohio – On a day when the Oberlin College softball team honored its senior class, it was the visiting Kenyon College Ladies who put a damper on the celebration as they upended the Yeowomen 13-2 and 14-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Kenyon (18-18, 7-7 NCAC) pounded out 32 hits in the twinbill, while the Yeowomen were limited to just nine.
In the lid-lifter, the Ladies posted nine runs over the first three innings, but the Yeowomen finally broke through in the fourth inning as sophomore
Kristine Kuchta followed senior
Sophie Schacht's double down the left line with a single to centerfield for Oberlin's first run of the day. Sophomore
Kristen Dix followed with a two-base hit of her own to the gap in left-center-field for the second tally of the inning.
In the nightcap Oberlin had two runners on in each of the first two innings, but could not push one across the plate.
Kenyon scratched out a run in the second, but would add four more in the third. Oberlin got on the board in the home-half of the third on a towering solo home run by Dix.
Both teams would go scoreless in the fourth, but the Ladies erupted for nine runs in the fifth to put the game away.
Dix and Kuchta each had two hits on the day.
Following the doubleheader, seniors
Julia Chauvin,
Kate Phillips,
Jen Sees,
Sophie Schacht and
Lauren Luther were honored by Head Coach Adrienne Davis.
Oberlin will surely miss the record-breaking senior class, but will now look to the future with a promising young core set to return next season.
