Game 2 Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – Making their conference home debut, the Yeowomen were outslugged by the Scots of The College of Wooster as Oberlin dropped both games in today's doubleheader. The final score of Game 1 read 9-3 Wooster, while Game 2 finished 14-4 in favor of the visitors in just five innings.
The Yeowomen gave up a run to Wooster in the first inning of the opener, but the offense responded with a big second inning.
Megan Widmer led off the inning getting hit by a pitch in the back. Widmer advanced to second on a wild pitch and
Lauren Luther singled up the middle, and advanced to second on the
throw. This gave Oberlin two runners in scoring position with nobody out. After
Sophie Schacht grounded out to the shortstop,
Kristine Kuchta singled through the left side scoring Widmer. Executing a nifty double-steal, Kuchta stole second while Luther successfully swiped home plate; then Kuchta advanced to third on a throwing error by the second baseman, and scored when the throw went into the Oberlin dugout.
Wooster responded in the next half inning with three runs of their own, to take a 4-3 lead. Jenn Horton shut down the Oberlin bats the rest of the way and Wooster added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. Wooster pounded out 18 hits to just seven for Oberlin, including five of the extra base variety.
Head Coach Adrienne Davis said, “We had some good chances in this game and kept it close. A couple of different decisions could have changed the score early on, but it is tough to win games when the middle of your opponents lineup bats 12 for 14. When that happens you need to tip your hat to them for getting the big hits that we were unable to match.”
In the second game of the doubleheader Wooster once again came out blazing pushing 11 runs across before Oberlin could get on the board. The big hit was a grand slam by leftfielder Lauren Swinehart with two outs in the second inning.
Brittany Dawson, Kuchta, and
Katie Baldonieri each had two hits to lead the Oberlin offense in the nightcap. The crimson and gold did put together a nice three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth, but it was too little, too late as they fell 14-4.
Starting shortstop
Kristine Kuchta had a terrific individual day as she went 5-6 improving her batting average to .355. Kuchta also scored three runs, stole two bases and recorded an RBI.
The Yeowomen will once again look for their first home win of the season as they square off against conference foe Wittenberg this Saturday at 1 pm.
