Oberlin, Ohio – Senior Day for the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team couldn't have come to an end in a more heartbreaking fashion as Chris Pappalardo's goal with four seconds left to play lifted the visiting Kenyon College Lords to a 9-8 win over the Yeomen on Wednesday evening.

With the clock ticking down it appeared as if the game was headed to overtime, but Max Olson scooped up a groundball from behind the cage and found Pappalardo in front of the goal for a clean look.

“Despite the outcome of the game, this one of the best efforts our team has put together,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said. “I feel for our guys and especially the senior class who I know wanted this win so badly. They are a special group that has set the foundation for this program as it continues to grow and they will surely be missed next season.”

First-year Connor Jackson led the Yeomen scoring attack with three goals, while classmate Thomas Hake added two. Rob Bond also dished out two assists in the loss.

The two foes traded two goals each in the opening period with the OC scores coming courtesy of Alex Jacobs and Dylan Holmes. Jackson netted the lone score in the second session to give the Yeomen a 3-2 edge at the break.

The Lords came out firing in the third period as they triggered 20 shots in frame, scoring the first three goals of the quarter to grab a 5-3 lead. However, Hake would cash in his first goal of the day with 2:46 remaining, cutting the score to 5-4 heading into the fourth.

Kenyon (6-7, 1-3 NCAC) scored three out of the first five goals of the quarter, but man-up goals by Erik Strand and Hake made the score 8-6 in favor of Kenyon with 5:48 left in the game.

The Yeomen (4-8, 0-5 NCAC) continued to fight, winning critical face-offs down the stretch that led to two goals in a one-minute-forty-second time span by Jackson to tie the game at the 3:06 mark.

In the closing moments, Oberlin was able to squeeze off a few more looks at the cage, but could not push one through which led to Pappalardo's thrilling finish.

Sophomore netminder Glen Gerbush turned in a career performance with 19 saves.

Despite being out-shot 44-31, Oberlin won the groundball battle 35-26.

Oberlin honored its senior class of Joey Pope, Luke Politis, Alex Jacobs, Alex Chapman and Erik Strand prior to the game.

The Yeomen will conclude their season on Wednesday, May 5 at Otterbein College. The opening face-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
