Sharp Shooting Offense Makes for Super Senior Day

Oberlin sends senior Maddie Fierstein out with a win
Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio
– Women's Lacrosse wrapped up their 2010 campaign with a dazzling 19-12 win over the Cardinals of North Central College underneath bright sunny skies at home this weekend.

The Yeowomen jumped out of the gates quickly as first-year Green Mountain state native Grace Amber buried a shot into the back of the net with only 19 seconds off the game clock. Fellow first-year Molly Bloom scored the games' second goal shortly thereafter, and junior Alison Masyr gave Oberlin a 3-0 lead only three minutes and change into the contest.

The scorching Oberlin offense continued its roll throughout the first half as Bloom and Amber each added two more goals in the opening session. Joining the first-year, first half barrage, was Ilyssa Meyer who also netted a hat trick in the first frame. After a dominating performance in the first period, Oberlin led 13-4.

The second half played out differently as North Central scored the first two goals to cut the Oberlin lead to seven. A nifty goal from Alice Zicht, who received a pass from Meyer over the back of the net and one-timed a shot past the North Central goalie, finally got Oberlin back on the board with 24:10 remaining.

Back and forth play shaped much of the second period as the visiting Cardinals chipped the lead down to five with 9:04 left in the game. Oberlin's youth closed the door though, scoring three of the games' last four goals to secure a wire-to-wire 19-12 victory.

While the scoreboard displayed a solid victory for the Yeowomen, for those who were in attendance the game was played closer than the scoreboard revealed. “Madeleine O'Meara was fantastic in the net today” said Oberlin co-coach Nancy Boutilier. “She stepped up and made one save after another, stopping North Central's very talented attack. Her play in goal really allowed us the chance to get the lead and hold on as they unleashed a relentless attack on us down the stretch.”

O'Meara made 18 saves, many of which seemed to come from a point-blank range. While the Oberlin defense held strong, stopping 60% of the Cardinal shots on goal, the Oberlin offense was equally stellar, as the Yeowomen were able to cash in on nearly 70% of the shots they put on net.

Zicht finished the season with one of her best games of the year scoring four times and assisting on four others. Amber and Meyer tied for the game-high in goals scored with five each. Also scoring for the Yeowomen were Bloom (3), Masyr (1), and Lori Sako (1).

Co-Coach Deb Ranieri said, “I am so proud of the way our girls competed all season long. This is a great way to send Maddie Fierstein out. She has been a great competitor for our program, a wonderful person to have around and we will definitely miss her.”

Oberlin finishes the season 4-11, and will return an impressive young nucleus of players who gained valuable experience this spring.
