Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team turned in two strong efforts, but fell short to Denison University on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader by the scores of 10-3 and 12-8.
In the game-two slugfest, the Yeowomen pounded out 12 hits led by a 3-for-4 two-RBI effort by senior
Julia Chauvin.
Megan Widmer and
Sophie Schacht also had two hits each and combined for four RBI's.
Oberlin (4-24, 1-5 NCAC) got the bats going early, positing five runs in the top of the first inning that featured a two-run single by Chauvin, a bases-loaded walk to Widmer and a costly Denison error.
Unfortunately, Denison (19-11, 5-1 NCAC) would put together a big inning of its own, using six hits and one Oberlin miscue to post seven runs in the bottom of the second.
The Big Red would add a single tally in the fifth and four in the sixth.
The Yeowomen tried to battle back in the top of the seventh as Widmer came through with a two-RBI double down the right field line to score Chauvin and
Brittany Dawson. Schacht would add a double to the left-center-field gap to score
Katie Baldonieri, but the Yeowomen would eventually run out of outs.
In the lid-lifter it was the tandem of Chauvin, Widmer and
Kristine Kuchta that led the OC offense as the threesome combined to go 6-for-12 while accounting for all three of Oberlin's runs.
Like in game two, Oberlin was able to get off to a quick start as Chauvin and Widmer each came through with run-producing hits to give their team an early 2-0 cushion.
In the third inning, Widmer's single up the middle would send Chauvin plateward, but from that point on the Yeowomen couldn't find a way to get a timely base hit to add anymore runs.
With two runs in the bottom of third and one in the fourth, the Big Red tied the game at three. However, it was a big five-run fifth that put a dagger in the Yewomen and allowed Denison to secure the win.
The Yeowomen return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. NCAC double-dip at Allegheny College.
