Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team squared off against Kenyon College in a North Coast Athletic Conference match up this afternoon in John W. Heisman Field House.
Kenyon's nationally ranked squad rolled through doubles and singles action sweeping the Yeomen. The Lords brought a No. 9 ranking into today's contest along with several regionally ranked team members.
Oberlin's second doubles pairing of
Joe Leffler and
Sam Towne were the closest to their Kenyon counterparts but came up short dropping the match 8-3.
Ben Godlove had his hands full in the No. 1 singles slot meeting the Central Region's top ranked player, Mike Greenberg. Greenberg took down Godlove 6-2 in the first set and earned a 6-0 second set win for the straight set victory.
Hitting in the No. 5 position Towne produced a good first set effort narrowly falling 6-4 to Jared Goldstein. However, Goldstein had the staying power and proved to be too much in the second set for Towne as he dropped the set 6-1.
“This is a very strong Kenyon team; they are good from the top of their lineup to the bottom and can mix it up as well. Sam showed well early in his match but just didn't have the energy to match his opponent,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “We are looking forward to the week ahead as we recover and prepare for Allegheny. We need to step up our play a bit for that match and prepare for the conference tournament.”
Oberlin (3-19) will have a week to prepare for their final regular season match. The Yeomen will travel to Allegheny College for their final conference match in the East Division. The Yeomen and Gators are slated for a 12 p.m. start Saturday, April 24.
