Cleveland, Ohio
– Oberlin College split a doubleheader with greater Cleveland area rival Case Western Reserve University, winning the first game 7-4, but fell in game two 11-3 at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio.

Oberlin got off to a fast start on the day scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Three of the first four batters reached base before Katie Baldonieri ripped an RBI single to left field. Sophomore Megan Widmer followed that up with an RBI single of her own and Baldonieri scored on an error by Case.

Case responded in the third inning, scoring four runs on six hits to take a 4-3 advantage. The Yeowomen responded in the next half inning with four runs of their own to recapture the lead.

The big hits this time for Oberlin were back-to-back doubles by Lauren Luther and Kate Phillips, both of whom would also come around to score in the inning.

Widmer shut down the Spartans the rest of the way to earn her second complete game victory of the season.

Head Coach Adrienne Davis was pleased with the effort today. “Our offense has been clicking pretty good since we got back from Spring Break. Katie and Megan really battled at the plate and it was great to see some run production outside the middle of our lineup. This is a sign that we are starting to get good swings on the ball from our entire order.”

In game two Case scored six times before Oberlin could get on the board. The Spartans pounded out 17 hits off senior slinger Jen Sees. Once again Oberlin produced back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning this time by Julia Chauvin and Baldonieri, but the Spartans quickly stymied any Oberlin rally.

The other bright spot for the Oberlin offense in game two was a two-run blast by sophomore Kristen Dix. The homerun over the left-centerfield wall was the first of Dix's brief Oberlin career, and makes her just the 12th player in Oberlin history to hit a homerun.

This marks the end of Oberlin's 2010 non-conference campaign finishing with a record of 3-19, with wins over three different opponents. Oberlin will travel to Denison this Saturday as they resume NCAC conference play at 1 pm.
