Granville, Ohio – Both the Oberlin College men's and women's track and field teams turned in valiant efforts at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships as the Yeowomen placed second and the Yeomen ended fourth.
For the second straight season Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer was named as the NCAC Women's Coach of the Year and after the meet he said, “both teams were just great this weekend. The guys challenged for third place throughout and the women were right there with Ohio Wesleyan as well. I am really excited for our program right now.”
Senior
Clara Shaw was tabbed as the NCAC Women's Middle Distance/Distance Runner of the Year and she lived up to the billing on this day. The Roseville, Minnesota, native won the 800 meters with an NCAA provisional-qualifying and school-record time of 2:16.35 and also claimed the top spot in the mile with a mark of 5:06.43.
First-year sensation
Marissa Clardy flew through the 400-meter dash in 59.39 to win the event, while teammate
Amanda Miller ended third at 1:00.08.
The Yeowomen displayed their relay dominance by winning both the 4x400 and 4x200. The foursome of
Melissa Elie,
Laura Vernon, Miller and Clardy completed the shorter trek of the two in 1:48 flat, while pentathlon winner
Madeline Schultz teamed-up with Vernon, Miller and Clardy to win the 4x400 in a new conference-record time of 4:04.50. Schultz also finished second in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.04.
Oberlin claimed spots three through five in the 3,000 meters with
Joanna Johnson finishing third in 10:28.45. Senior
Cordelia Revells followed behind at 10:40.11 and sophomore
Christine Moore was next at 10:42.10.
The Yeowomen ended with 150 points, while Ohio Wesleyan won the event with 164.5 points.
Highlighting the day for the Yeomen was their school-record performance in the 4x200 meter relay. The clique of
Solomon Turner,
Thomas Shaw,
Shawn Chrapczynski and
Seth Wimberly completed the course in 1:32.16 to finish third overall while setting the new OC standard.
Wimberly, the anchor of that recording-setting relay unit, also had a great meet individually as he placed second in the 400 meters (50.50) and 200 meters (22.81) as well.
In the 200 meters Chrapczynski followed in third place at 22.85 and Turner ended fifth with a timestamp of 22.98. Turner also finished fourth in the 400 meters by stopping the clock at 51.19.
Sophomore
Stephen Williams recorded six team points for Oberlin by placing third in the 3,000 meters with a school-record run 8:47.84.
The Yeomen also placed third in the 4x400 relay (3:29.96) and fourth in the DMR (10:50.29).
OC finished just four points back of Allegheny with 79 points. The Battling Bishops won the men's crown as well with 165 points.
