Orlando, Florida
– The Oberlin College men's tennis team took to the courts in sunny Florida for two matches today. In the morning match the Yeomen fell to Hamline University 8-1. Oberlin closed the day's action squaring off against Cornell College in a match that was rescheduled from a first day rain out in Orlando; the Rams won 6-3.

Doubles action proved to be very exciting and competitive in the first match of the day. The Yeomen's No. 3 pairing, Sam Towne and Peder Davis, raced out to a lead and held on for an 8-4 win.

In the top spot, OC's Ben Godlove and Eliot Heaton, were in a tightly contested match. Hamline's David Croonquist and Robert Becker edged out the win in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-4).

Oberlin's No. 2 partnership of Ben Turchin and Joe Leffler found themselves out in front of Bernard Mitambo and Kyle Helgemoe but let a few points drop to the Pipers and ended up on the wrong side of a 9-8 (7-5) scoreline.

“This afternoon's match was our fourth in two days, we are beginning to put some things together and figuring out that we can compete and are learning how to support each other during match play,” commented head coach Adam Shoemaker.

Godlove and Heaton put in another solid effort in the top doubles slot as they defeated Cornell's Bronson Brassel and Neal Klauer, 8-6.

Oberlin earned singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 slots. Godlove proved to be too much for Brassel. After dropping the first set 7-5 Godlove grabbed a 6-4 second set win and took the super tiebreaker 10-8.

Heaton earned a straight set win over Kristofer Anderson (6-4, 7-5), he and Godlove were double winners in the match against the Rams.

Oberlin will conclude their spring break trip with a match against St. Thomas University (MN) on April 1st at 9 a.m. before returning home. Oberlin will begin North Coast Athletic Conference action April 6th when they visit The College of Wooster.
