Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team played toe-to-toe with Kenyon College for 20 minutes, but the visiting Ladies used a big second-half push to get by the Yeowomen 73-53 on Friday night at Philips Gym.
Oberlin's offense, which at times was as cold as the weather outside, was led by junior
Syrea Thomas with 16 points. Rookie point guard
Allison Anderson added 10 points to go along with team-highs in assists (6) and rebounds (7).
The Yeowomen (4-17, 3-9 NCAC) trailed 14-7 earlier on, but rallied back to tie the game at 14 all with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Moments later,
Megan Leary's line drive triple-hit from the far corner would give Oberlin its first lead of the game, 19-18, at the 6:57 mark. The two teams would stay tight for the rest of the frame as the Ladies had a slight 29-28 advantage at the break.
Oberlin started the second half with a 7-0 spurt that featured a 3-ball by Thomas and jumpers in the paint by
Emily Chu Finkel and Anderson to put the Yeowomen out front 35-29, but Ladies would come roaring back in a hurry with a 16-0 run of their own to take a 45-35 lead with 12:22 left to play. Unfortunately, Oberlin would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Oberlin had a chilly shooting night – connecting on just 28.6-percent of its shots, while on the flipside the Ladies (14-7, 7-5 NCAC) shot a blistering 50.9-percent (28-of-55). The Yeowomen were also hindered by a 42-29 disadvantage on the glass, which helped lead to 13 second chance points for Kenyon.
The Yeowomen will have to put this one behind them very quickly as they go right back to work tomorrow night at the College of Wooster. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
