Final Results
Oberlin, Ohio – The Yeowomen tennis team bounced back from a midweek loss to even their season record at 3-3 when they defeated the visiting Panthers of Ohio Dominican University this afternoon.
In a contest that was close from the onset, it would take a total team effort for Oberlin College to notch their third win of the year. At the conclusion of doubles action OC lead ODU 2-1.
Oberlin's top duo of
Ariel Lewis and
Finley Gates knocked out an 8-2 win at doubles No.1 versus Nathalia Braga and Aline Mariano.
Rebecca Brown and
Emily Thebaut were in a tight match with Mari Monaco and April Zaborsky before edging out the Panther pairing 8-6.
“This was a total team win, all nine girls played a part this afternoon. We showed strength from top to bottom today proving that we have depth within this team,” commented Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis.
In singles play OC's ace, Lewis, earned her fourth straight win by defeating Kate Rodgers at No. 1. The middle of the Oberlin line up battled but Gates,
Preeya Shah and Brown each dropped straight set matches at No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
The team score was not decided until the final match on the court was resolved, Ohio Dominican took a 4-3 lead following its three singles wins. Oberlin's
Liz Saltzman defeated Monaco 6-2, 6-4 to draw the two teams even.
It would be up to
Carolyn Ball in the No. 6 singles slot to propel the Yeowomen to victory. She provided Oberlin the much needed fifth team point by winning 6-2, 6-2 over April Zaborsky.
Ananiadis said, “This was a great win and it should provide us with some confidence heading into our trip out East”
The Oberlin College women's tennis team will travel to the Philadelphia area to take on Swarthmore College and Haverford College next weekend, February 27-28.
