Day One of the NCAC Championships is in the Books

Canton, Ohio – The Oberlin College swimming and diving teams had a successful start to the 2010 NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday.

The Yeowomen used a late push to end the day in fifth place with 213 points, while the Yeomen sit in seventh place with 135 points.

“It was good first day for us and now we just need to build off this as we head into tomorrow,” Head Coach Mark Fino said.

Highlighting the day for the Yeowomen was a school recording-setting effort in the 200-yard free relay as the clique of Flora Samis, Danica Watson, Shannon Gallagher and Sara Kadi combined to complete the course in 1:40.20 to finish in sixth place.

Kadi, a junior from Oakland, California, also recorded an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:09.49 in the 200-yard IM to place ninth overall. Had she qualified in the prelims, her mark would have been good for sixth place.

Propelling the Yeowomen into fifth place was the diving tandem of Christine Martin and Chelsea Lane. Martin claimed fifth place off the 3-meter board with 307.65 points, while Lane ended in seventh with 268.85 points.

In the prelims Laura Fries turned in a personal best effort of 5:15.05 in the 500-yard free. In the finals she ended in 16th with a timestamp of 5:17.69.

The men's 200-yard free relay team of James Foust, Bud Stracker, Nick Lashway, and Chris Canning kicked off the meet in fine fashion by touching in at 1:26.87 to finish in seventh place.

Lashway also placed 11thin the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:57.60, while Canning turned in a season-best effort in the 50-yard free as he went down and back in 21.86 to finish in 17th place.

Junior Jon Vimr recorded a person-best mark in the 500-yard free by tapping the wall in 4:48.69 to place 16th overall.

Day two of the NCAC Championships is action packed with 15 events on the docket. Prelims will get underway at 10 a.m.
