Men's Basketball Story Reported by Mike Mancini

2010-11 Men’s Basketball Season Preview

Senior James Tompsett leads the Yeomen into the 2010-11 season.
Oberlin, Ohio – The 2010-11 Oberlin College men's basketball team has a nice blend of veterans and young talent that could come together to make some noise in the North Coast Athletic Conference this season.

With the start of the season just around the corner, here is an in-depth look at the Yeomen by position.

Center
Senior James Tompsett is poised to have a career-year in the middle for the Yeomen … His 6-foot-7 inch frame will cause problems for fellow bigs, and despite his height he has great athleticism that allows him to be even more dynamic on the offensive end … Last season he tied for the team lead in shooting at .529 (64-121) and averaged six points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Junior Mazi Farris will also see time at the five position and is arguably the team's best interior defender … A lanky 6-foot-4 presence in the paint, his long wing span also presents problems for opposing offensives.

Forward
Oberlin returns one of the premier sophomores in the conference in 2009 All-NCAC Honorable-Mention selection Andrew Fox … Last year the Tempe, Arizona, native was the only player in the NCAC to finish the season in the Top 10 of the league in scoring (15 ppg/6th), rebounds (6.3 rpg/9th), assists (62/10th) and field goal percentage (.529/4th)

Highly-touted rookie Geoff Simpson along with junior Hal Sundt will also be heavily relied upon this season … First-year Trey Levy, who checks in a 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, is another big body Coach Cavaco can use inside.

Guard
Junior Josh Merritt returns as one of the most experienced point guards in the North Coast having played in 47 games over his first two seasons … He ended the 2009-10 campaign scoring in double figures in 10 out of the last 14 games and finished fifth in the league with 3.2 assists per game.

Senior Pat Bernhard has worked hard throughout the off-season on his jump shot and early in the preseason his hard work has been paying off … The co-captain has the potential to be one of the top shooters in the conference.

Sophomore Charlie Crawford-Silva also busted onto the scene last season and displayed his ability to score, producing points in the team's final six games after scoring in just three of the prior 19 games.

A trio of first-years add depth to backcourt with Emmanuel Lewis likely to see the most minutes right away … Classmates Kyle Oblinger and Derrick Sant provide added depth … After missing all of last season due to injury, the Yeomen also welcome back one of the hardest working players on the team in junior Jacob Goldstein.

Schedule
Oberlin, which was selected ninth in NCAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, begins its season Monday night at home against Westminster … Conference play gets underway the first week of December with home tilts against Allegheny and Ohio Wesleyan … The highlight of schedule comes after Christmas when Oberlin will make the trek to Rhode Island to take on Division I Bryant University on Dec. 28.

Note all home games will feature live video and live statistics.
