Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team turned in another promising performance, but in the end the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops proved to be too strong as they pushed past the Yeowomen 69-54 on Saturday night at Philips Gym.

Oberlin (2-11, 1-3 NCAC) got a career-night from senior Emily Chu Finkel as she netted a career-best 15 points to go along with a season-high 12 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the year. First-year Kelly Warlich also scored 15 points in the game, with 13 coming in the first half. Senior Kayla Brandt added 10 points, while first-year Allison Anderson contributed nine points in addition to dishing out nine assists.

“You can really see this team improving night in and night out,” Head Coach Kerry Jenkins said. “We were right there with them throughout the game and I am proud of the progress we continue to show.”

It was a tale of two halves for the Yeowomen as sharp first-half shooting helped give them a 35-30 lead at the break. Oberlin shot 50-percent (15-of-30) overall - and from 3-point land (5-of-10) in the opening stanza.

However, in the second half the hoop seemed to shrink a little bit as the Yeowomen made just 25-percent of their attempts with seven makes on 28 shots.

A Brandt triple-hit to start the second half put Oberlin on top 38-30, but the Bishops (9-4, 4-0 NCAC) used a 17-5 run over the next nine-plus minutes to claim a 47-43 lead with 10:13 left on the clock. Back-to-back buckets by Warlich and Syrea Thomas would put Oberlin back on top briefly until Tyler Cordell would cash in an old fashion 3-point play the next trip down to put OWU on top for good.

Oberlin continued to fight as Anderson got her team back within six, 59-53, with 2:56 remaining by finishing off a left-handed lay-up with a foul for a 3-point play of her own. Unfortunately, they would get no closer the rest of the way.

The Yeowomen will cap off their seven-game homestand on Wednesday night when Denison University comes to town for a 7 p.m. showdown.
