Box Score
Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team trailed by just four points with a little over five minutes to play against first place Wittenberg, but in the end the Tigers pushed past the Yeowomen 75-58 on Saturday afternoon at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
The first-year duo of
Allison Anderson and
Kelly Warlich continue to impress as they combined to score 38 points in the game. Anderson added a team-high seven rebounds to her 24 points, while Warlich ripped down six boards in addition to her 14 points. Junior
Syrea Thomas also netted 11 points in the setback.
“This was another great effort by our team,” Head Coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “We battled hard throughout and left everything out there on the court.”
Wittenberg led 61-57 with 5:16 left to play, but from then on it seemed as if the Tigers placed a lid over the Oberlin basket, as the Yeowomen would add just a single tally the rest of the way.
Oberlin (3-14, 2-6 NCAC) led by three on two different occasions late in the first half, but ended up down by the same margin, 36-33, at the intermission.
In the second session, the Yeowomen fell behind by as many as eight points, 41-33, before rallying back to tie the game at 49 with 11:28 left to play. Unfortunately, the veteran-filled Tigers team would respond by closing out the game on a 26-9 run.
Oberlin shot 32.3-percent (21-of-65) from the field, but struggled from long range as it made just 6-of-35 (17.1%) triple-tries. Wittenberg, which improved its record to 10-6 overall and 8-0 in the NCAC checked in at 42.9-percent (30-of-70).
The Yeowomen return to the hardwood on Wednesday evening at Allegheny College. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
