Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – Forty minutes on the hardwood wasn't enough to determine a winner between the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots and the Oberlin College Yeowomen, but in the end the Scots came away with 78-74 overtime win on Wednesday night.
First-year sensation
Allison Anderson was simply amazing as she finished with a career-high 28 points to go along with a career-best eight steals, seven rebounds and six assists. Fellow rookie
Kelly Warlich added 14 points and ripped down a career-high 12 rebounds. Junior
Syrea Thomas also netted 14 points in the setback.
With the score tied at 68, the Scots had a chance to win it in the closing seconds but Kym Wenz's leaning baseline jumper bounced out to send the game into the extra session. Wooster scored the first four points of OT, but an Anderson triple-hit got OC right back within striking distance. Four straight Scots' free throws would push the lead back out to five, 76-71, with 1:50 remaining, but the Yewomen would get within two, 76-74, with 29 seconds left on a Thomas lay-up. However, Wenz would put the game away with two charity tosses – giving her a team-high 25 points.
Oberlin (3-13, 2-5 NCAC) trailed 23-5 with 11:05 left in the first half, but it fought all the way back to get within three, 38-35, at the intermission. The Yeowomen would continue to pour it on to start the second half as Warlich scored 12 straight points to start the frame - giving the Yeowomen a 49-38 advantage at the 17:13 mark.
A three-ball by Thomas gave the Yeowomen their largest lead of the game, 55-41, with 16:15 left to play. Wooster (7-10, 4-4 NCAC) managed to chip away at the lead and eventually tie the score at 66 with 3:42 left on the clock, which lead to the dramatic overtime finish.
Oberlin shot 32.9-percent (24-of-73), but really hurt itself from 3-point land (10-of-40/25%) and at the free throw line where it converted just 16-of-25 freebies for a 64-percent success rate.
The Scots checked in at 38.5-percent (30-of-78) from the floor – including 7-of-17 (41.2%) from long range. They also cashed in 11-of-13 (84.6%) free throws.
The Yeowomen created a season-high 16 steals as the Scots had 19 turnovers, which translated into 23 Oberlin points.
Oberlin will take to the road to battle Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
