Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio –
Despite Emily Chu Finkel's first-career double-double and 18 points from first-year Kelly Warlich, the Oberlin College women's basketball team couldn't hold off the visiting Marygrove College Mustangs as they topped the Yeowomen 60-53 on Saturday afternoon.

Warlich, a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, scored 13 of her points in the first half as she came out scoring hot by knocking down her first three triple-tries of the game. Chu Finkel finished with a career-high 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and tied a season-high with 11 rebounds.

It was really a tale of two halves for the Yeowomen as they shot 43.8-percent (14-of-32) in the first half, but connected on just 28.6-percent (8-of-28) of their attempts in the second session.

Oberlin (2-9) led 36-29 at the break and continued to lead all the way until the final 4:38 when the Mustangs grabbed a 51-49 edge on a Keara Marks lay-up. The bucket was a part of a 19-6 Marygrove run from the 9:21 mark of the second half until the final buzzer went off.

“This one really hurts as I felt we let one slip away,” Head Coach Kerry Jenkins said. “We played very hard, but just couldn't quite finish the job today. You have to give them credit too as they were a very athletic team and played aggressive throughout.”

Marygrove (6-7) benefited from a large discrepancy at the free throw line as its attacking style offense earned them 18 charity tosses – 13 of which were converted for a 72.2-percent success rate. The Yeowomen made just five trips to the line – none of which came in the second half.

The Mustangs also won the rebounding battle 52-42 – including a 20-8 edge on the offensive end, which resulted in 16 second chance points.

Oberlin will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when Allegheny College comes to town for a 7 p.m. tip.
