Oberlin, Ohio – Playing in its first home game in over a month, the Oberlin College men's basketball team could not treat the Philips faithful with a win as it was defeated by Kenyon College 78-64 on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Marcus Johnson was the lone Yeoman in double figures as he netted a career-high 26 points in his 30 minutes of work off the bench. The Winter Springs, Florida, product hit 4-of-9 3-pointers and was 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
Oberlin's lone lead of the game came just moments in when
Mazi Farris connected on a 15-foot baseline jumper with a foul. His 3-point play put the Yeomen on top 5-4. However, no more than seven points separated the two teams in the first half, but the Lords held a 37-32 advantage at the break.
In the second session, Kenyon (4-10, 1-5 NCAC) quickly built its cushion up to 10, 46-36, at the 16:05 mark. After trailing by as many as 15, The Yeomen (4-11, 0-6 NCAC) were able to fight back to get within seven, 60-53, with 6:51 left to play. Unfortunately, the Lords responded right back with a 10-2 run over the next five minutes to put the game on ice.
After shooting 42.3-percent (11-of-26), including 5-of-6 (83.3%) from 3-point land in the first half, the hoop seemed to shrink on the Yeomen in the second half as they connected on just 29.6-percent (8-of-27) of their shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
Kenyon, which shot 48-percent (24-of-50), was led by J.T. Knight as he cashed in 6-of-9 triple-tries en route to scoring a team-high 22 points.
Oberlin will look to put a stop to its six-game skid on Wednesday night when Wooster comes to town for an 8 p.m. tip-off. The Yeowomen and Scots will precede the men's game at 6 p.m.
