Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team used strong defense and consistent play at the net to upend the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks in straight sets 25-20, 30-28 and 25-22.
“This was a great win for us tonight,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We played calm and collective throughout the match and played together as a team. Our defense really carried us as we were able to get multiple transition kills and we did a good job of keeping them guessing all night.”
First-year
Rosie Eck continued to shine as she hit an impressive .526, finishing error-free with 10 kills on 19 swings. Fellow Rookie
Laura Jessee also had a strong performance with 14 kills, while
Amanda Wysk added 10.
Senior
Rita Kaplon displayed her ability to run the offense as she dished out 40 assists on the night. Three Yeowomen ended with double-digit digs with senior Tamela Platt leading the way with 19.
Chinwe Okona and Wysk also added 10 each.
After fairly easy win in the first set, Oberlin was pushed to the limit in each of the next two. The Yeowomen fought off game point on multiple occasions before finally escaping with the win in game two. In the third set they also found themselves down 23-19 before ripping off six straight points to clinch the match.
With the win Oberlin improves to 8-8 on the year, while surpassing its win total from a season ago.
The Yeowomen conclude their mini two-game homestand on Friday night when Adrian College comes to town for a 6:30 tilt. Fans should note that the match has been moved up a half hour from its original start time of 7 p.m.
