Series Information ...
Oberlin trails in the all-time series against the Presidents 0-3-1 … Saturday marks only the fifth meeting between the two foes with their first showdown coming way back in 1894 when the teams played to a 0-0 stalemate … In the 2008 match-up,
Ryan Harvey totaled 94 receiving yards and one touchdown …
Scott Kjellberg added one catch for 15 yards and
Sean Curtis had two catches for 14 yards … On the Defensive side,
Austin Richards and
Drew Mixter led the way with 13 tackles apiece …
Shawn Chrapczynski had two interceptions, and Richards had one interception … Despite W&J's high national ranking, the game was a back-and-forth as it featured six lead changes and five ties … The Yeomen led 28-21 at the break following
Peter Morris' block punt return for a touchdown ... The game was tied 35-35 with 12:47 to go in the 4th quarter before the Presidents pulled away.
Scouting the Presidents…
Washington and Jefferson has a very rich tradition of winning that has put its program in the national spotlight … The Presidents have had 25 consecutive winning seasons and are annually ranked in the top 25 ... This season is no different, coming off of a 2008 season that included an 11-2 record, and made it to the third round of the NCAA playoffs … The Presidents lost 11 senior starters from last year, and are going to have to lean on their defense during the early part of their season while their inexperienced offense has a chance to adjust to the speed of college football.
The R.V Has Pulled Out of Town …
Looking to fill the void of Oberlin's all time leading rusher
R.V. Carroll, are sophomores
Sean Curtis and
Adam Lowther … The duo is projected to split time in the backfield as Curtis had 23 rushes for 145 yards last year while Lowther was mainly a special teams player … Kjellberg will be a threat at the fullback position and has the ability to run the ball or catch passes out of the backfield.
J-Z At the Helm of the OC Offense ...
Junior
Joey Zebelian, who has seen limited action in his first two years, fills the shoes of three-year starter
Greg Mangan ... Backing up Zebelian is freshman
David Kalgren, a decorated high school quarterback, who was named all-state in Pennsylvania.
Out of the Training Room …
On the defensive side of the ball the Yeoman are very experienced, and look for the return of injured players
Austin Richards and
Derrick Dennis to make their defense a force this year … Dennis, who missed all of last season a knee injury, is back to bolster the Yeomen line-backing core … Richards was having a career year with 55 tackles through six games, before missing the final four contests … He also had five TFL and a team-high two sacks.
New Coaching Changes…
The Yeomen have made a few off-season coaching moves this year ... Former NFL running back and Virginia Tech star Lee Suggs enters his first year as a full-time assistant coach and will be in charge of the quarterbacks … Alan Estep was promoted to associate head coach this year and will take over as offensive coordinator … Kevin Wahl moves from defensive line to linebackers, and the coaching staff welcomes newcomers
Kris Devant (Safties), Josh Schneider (Place Kickers/ Punters),
Adam Sopkovich (Running Backs), and Jehu Anderson (Defensive Backs) … Head Coach
Jeff Ramsey enters his 11th season at the helm of the Oberlin program and has a career record of 26-74.
