Yeomen Baseball Introduces Newcomers

Oberlin, Ohio – Head baseball coach Eric Lahetta announced the arrival of the 2010 recruiting class on Wednesday. The program is adding 10 freshmen beginning this fall. The Yeomen finished the 2009 season with a 15-25 overall and 5-11 NCAC record. The team returns six position starters, all four starting pitchers, and 17 lettermen.

“Coach Abrahamowicz was able to add some very talented and motivated ballplayers,” Lahetta said. “We are really eager to see how things shape up this fall. We have a number of veterans who are abroad during the first semester, so a lot of these newcomers will get some added playing time during the non-traditional season.”

Zach Barness (Paradise Valley, Arizona/Desert Mountain): Barness is a versatile outfielder/right-handed pitcher with some offensive potential. He is a National Honor Society student at Desert Mountain High School graduating with a 4.3 grade point average. He has been a four-time member of the Arizona Maccabi baseball team. This summer he is playing for the Phoenix Dust Devils.

Greg D'Agincourt (Westwood, Massachusetts /Xavieran Brothers): D'Agincourt is a middle infielder/pitcher who adds some much needed depth in the infield and bullpen. D'Agincourt helped lead the Hawks to an 11-10 overall record and 4-3 record in the Catholic League. D'Agincourt is playing for the Westwood American Legion Post 320 this summer.

Andy Eger (White Pigeon, Michigan/White Pigeon): Eger missed the 2009 baseball season due to knee surgery. When healthy he is an imposing first basemen and pitcher with a career batting average of over.400 during his three varsity season for the Chiefs. Eger will be playing tight end for the Yeomen football team this fall.

Matt Fish (Lake Orion, Michigan/Lake Orion): Fish helped led the Lake Orion Dragons to three OAA conference titles and one state championship. This past season, his team finished 21-11 overall and 11-2 in the OAA. Fish was a Dragons' team captain, named All-League shortstop and Honorable-Mention All-County. Fish's other accolades include team awards of Defensive Player-of-the-Year, the Coaches' Award, and the Sportsmanship Award. Fish batted .398 as a senior with 27 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. He finished with a .372 career batting average. This summer he is playing for the Orion Chargers.

Zach Jaspers (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier): Jaspers helped the St. X team to a 12-13 overall record and 6-4 record in the very competitive Greater Catholic League. Jaspers is a versatile player capable of playing the infield, outfield, and pitcher. He is a playing this summer for the Cincinnati Stix.

Eric Knight (Scottsdale, Arizona/Notre Dame Prep): Knight arrives in Oberlin from one of the most successful high school baseball programs in the country, in fact at one time this spring Notre Dame was ranked #2 in the country by Baseball America. He helped Notre Dame to a 30-2 record overall and 10-0 Black Canyon conference record. During his two varsity years, the Saints finished with a 59-6 overall record and 20-0 league record. During his senior season, Knight finished 4-0 on the bump to go along with one save. He also batted .326 with 15 RBI in as a first basemen. For his career, he compiled a 7-1 record and two saves. He earned Second-Team All-Region honors and was named to the All-Region Scholar Athlete team. Knight is a National Honor Society Student and earned Summa Cum Laude and Mu Alpha Theta awards as he graduated with a 4.31 grade point average. This summer, he is playing with the Scottsdale Spin Doctors for former Oakland A's pitcher Steve Ontiveros.

Nick Miller (Grafton, Ohio/Midview): Miller is a three-year varsity letterwinner for the Middies. Miller, a right-handed pitcher, was hampered this season by a broken left arm, but continued to pitch. He was a starting pitcher for three seasons racking up some impressive numbers. During his career, he has been named to the All-West Shore Conference team and All- Lorain County teams. Miller is a National Honor Society student and is playing for the North coast Vipers this summer.

John Rosser (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview): Rosser is a four-year letterwinner for the Clippers. He served as team captain for three seasons while compiling All-Patriot conference and All-Lorain County awards. He played in the Lorain County All-Star game and the Northeastern Ohio Baseball Association Cleveland All-Star game at Progressive Field. Rosser is a National Honor Society student. He is playing this summer for the North Coast Vipers.

Robin Witjes (Howell, Michigan/Howell): Witjes led the Highlanders to a 17-9 overall record and 10-4 Kensington Valley West record. The three-time varsity letter-winning outfielder finished with a .316 batting average with 26 runs scored, 16 runs batted in, and 13 stolen bases, He was a All-KVW selection as well as earning All-County. Witjes earned the Highlander of the Year Award for Howell High School. Witjes will also play football for the Yeomen after earning honorable mention all-state and numerous other awards on the gridiron.

Jake Streich-Kest (Brooklyn, New York/Beacon School): Kest is a walk-on third basemen from the Beacon School where he served as team captain and was a four-year letter-winner. Beacon finished with an 11-6 overall record and 8-1 in the Public School League-Manhattan. This summer, Kest is playing for the Brooklyn Bonnies.
