Oberlin, Ohio - Jen Sees turned in one of her best outings of the season to combine with clutch hitting and defense to lift the Oberlin College softball team to a thrilling 3-2 win in game two of a doubleheader against Albion on Friday afternoon. The Yeowomen lost the first contest 9-0.
Sees allowed just three hits and one earned run, while walking only two during her seven innings of work. Out of her 21 outs record – 13 came via the groundball as she a strong command of the bottom of the strike zone all game long.
The score was tied a two heading into the bottom of the sixth but a leadoff walk to Julia Chavin chased Albion starter Erin Giannotta out of the game. A sac bunt and a passed ball moved Chauvin to third to bring up first-year Katie Baldoneri in a critical situation. The rookie came through by roping a hard ground ball to third – freezing Chauvin for a mere second, but as the ball was released she broke for home to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
“I am happy for our team as they deserved this win today,” head coach Adrienne Davis said. “They way we bounced back after the first game says a lot bout the heart of our club and the toughness of this group to battle through adversity."
Albion got on the board first with a single tally in the second, but the Yeowomen knotted things up in the fourth as Chauvin started the inning with a double to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly Baldonieri.
The Britons would reclaim the lead in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, but Oberlin responded once again in the home-half of the inning. Reigning NCAC Player of the Week,
Kristine Kuchta came through with a two-out RBI single to score
Lauren Luther, who led off the inning with a single.
With the score tied at two, the key defensive play of the game came in the sixth as Samantha Kolling started the inning with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch. However, on the next play Kolling was gunned down at the plate as Kuchta fielded a hard grounder and threw a strike to catcher
Sara Gaines as she applied a picture-perfect swipe tag to the sliding Kolling. Sees would then induce a pop out and fly out to get out of the inning unharmed.
With the Yeowomen know on top, Oberlin recorded the first out of the seventh, but pinch hitter Jessica Strange reached on an error. However, no damage was done as the next two hitters grounded out and lined out to complete the Yeowomen's first home win of the season.
Kuchta finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Chauvin was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Luther also added two hits and a run, while Baldoneri had two RBI.
In game one the Britons used five hits and two Yeowomen errors in the third earning to score seven runs. Chauvin and Kristin Dix each had a hit for OC.
Oberlin will go right back to work tomorrow afternoon as Denison University comes to town for an NCAC twinbill starting at 1 p.m.
