Joanna Johnson Steals the Show...Again
Joanna Johnson
Day One Results

March 27, Atlanta, Ga
. – On day one of the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Georgia, senior Joanna Johnson was at it again, this time winning the 10,000 meter run in a stadium and school record time of 35:55.4. Her first place time was also fast enough to qualify Johnson for this year’s NCAA Division III National Meet in May.

Also making a strong day one showing for the Yeowomen was first-year distance runner Christine Moore. The Oberlin newcomer from Burke, Virginia took second place in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase. Moore clocked in at 11:57.7 in a very competitive field.

The Oberlin men’s team also had a nice performance in the Steeplechase; theirs came from freshman Stephen Williams. The native of Tennessee crossed the line in 6th place in a time of 9:53.6.

The day one story for the Yeomen happened in the field though. Oberlin took 3rd and 4th place in the Hammer Throw scoring 11 points in the event. Sophomore Josh Gallagher led the way with a toss of 127 feet, 2 inches, while senior A.J. Greene was right behind with a throw of 123 feet, 6 inches.

Putting more points on the board for the Yeomen in day one throwing events was senior Kyle Taljan. Coming off his strong performance in the decathlon last weekend, Taljan finished fifth in the event with a throw of 159 feet, 1 inch.

Rounding out the field events sophomore Tyler Lewis cleared 5’11 ¼” in the high jump. His best jump of the day was enough for him to slide into the 6th place slot in the event.

As a team, the Yeowomen rest in sixth place in the 16-team field with 20 points. The Yeomen ended the day in third place with 22 points.

The Oberlin men and women will be back in action for day two of the Emory Classic tomorrow, Saturday March 28, 2009. Unfortunately the weather looks a little soggy for the greater Atlanta metropolitan area on Saturday, and when the rain comes anything can happen.
