Records Fall on Day One of the NCAC Championships

Canton, Ohio – Senior Scott McInerney started his final NCAC Championship meet in grand fashion by setting a new school-record time of 21.06 in the 50-yard freestyle to highlight day one of the conference championships.

McInerney, a native of Randolph, New Jersey, was locked in from the start as his record-breaking swim came during the morning prelims. In the finals he was just one one-hundredth of a second back with an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 21.07 to finish seventh overall. He also turned in strong split times in the 200-yard free relay (20.29) and in the freestyle portion of the 400-yard medley relay (45.59).

First-year Nick Lashway continued his impressive rookie season by turning in the third-best time in school history in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 1:56.95 during the morning session. In the finals he checked in at 1:57.17 to finish 13th overall.

Sara Kadi, an all-conference selection last season, bested her own school record in the 200-yard IM with a time if 2:09.30.

The foursome of Shannon Gallagher, Flora Samis, Bryne Ulmschneider and Kadi combined to set a new Oberlin-best time of 1:41.92 in the 200-yard free relay to finish sixth overall.

Laura Fries also put together an impressive time of 5:18.67 in the 500-yard free – good for fourth-best all-time.

“It was a good first day for us as we had many strong swims,” head coach Mark Fino said. “The meet is incredibly fast so we are going to have to continue to compete at the highest level.”

As a team the Yeowomen finished with 179 points and rest in sixth place. The Yeomen sit in seventh place with 132 points.

Day two prelims will get underway tomorrow at 10 a.m.
