Track & Field Concludes the Golden Gala in Fine Fashion

Kent, Ohio – The Oberlin College track and field teams had a fine finish to their first meet of the season with many strong performances on day two of the Kent State Golden Gala.

“This was a much better performance for our team today,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “It was just good for us to get out there and compete against some top level teams.”

In a meet consisting of mostly Division I schools, Senior Clara Shaw finished third overall in the mile run with a time of 5:10.34. Teammate Joanna Johnson finished four spots back in seventh place with a mark of 5:21.52.

Shaw later returned to claim second place in the 800-meters with a time of 2:20.53. First-year Amanda Gracia also turned in strong run with a mark of 2:25.22 to place seventh. Teammates Marisa Clardy and Hannah Combe ended 12th and 13th respectively, with times of 2:28.03 and 2:28.54.

Junior Amanda Miller led the Yeowomen effort in the 400-meter dash by finishing 20th overall with a time of 1:01.64. Classmate Laura Vernon ended two places back at 1:01.82. First-year Sharon Cross stopped the clock at 1:05.77, ending in 42nd place.

Sophomore Melissa Elie finished 41st in the 200-meters with a time of 27.60.

Senior Seth Wimberly flew through the 400-meter dash in 49.73 to place 13th in the event.

Freshman Sean Bates turned in a 19th-place effort in the 800-meters by touching the tape in 2:02.93.

In the men's mile, freshman Alex Krichels checked in 20th overall by completing the course in 4:46.88.

Oberlin will return to action on January 15 when its host the first Oberlin Invite of the indoor season.
