Wysk and Kaplon Earn Conference Awards

Amanda Wysk and Rita Kaplon were honored by the NCAC.
Westlake, Ohio – Two of the key players in Oberlin's record-setting volleyball season were honored by the North Coast Athletic Conference on Sunday evening as junior Amanda Wysk earned All-NCAC Second-Team recognition while senior Rita Kaplon garnered honorable-mention accolades.

Wysk and Kaplon helped the Yeowomen set the school's NCAC wins record by finishing 7-9 in the league, which was good for fifth place. The duo also helped Oberlin tie the overall wins record with a 15-16 mark.

“I'm very proud of the entire team this season,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “Fortunately, two of our players have been acknowledged by the conference, but I was a little surprised that some of our other players did not get any recognition.”

Wysk finished the season ranked third in the conference with 3.25 kills per game and was second in the league with .36 services aces per game – totaling 42 in 116 sets. A native of Big Bend, Wisconsin, Wysk was also third in the NCAC in total points with 437.5.

“Amanda has been solid throughout her career and a go-to hitter for the team since she has been a freshman,” Cavanaugh added. “She has power and finesse which keeps opponents off balance. I am looking forward to getting her back next year as I believe she is poised for a great senior season.”

Kaplon, a 2008 NCAC All-NCAC Second-Team selection, broke her own single-season assists record this year, registering 1,062 helpers in 121 matches played, which was the second-highest total in the NCAC. Her 8.78 assists per game were also third best in the conference. Kaplon, a native of Yellow Springs, Ohio, will graduate from Oberlin in the spring as the all-time assists leader with 2,850 over her four-year career.

“Rita has done an excellent job running the offense since her first year,” Cavanaugh said. “Each year her mental game has improved, putting our hitters in opportunistic situations, which directly reflects the success of the program. She will surely be missed next season.”

The Yeowomen will take part in their non-traditional spring season before embarking on 2010 season next fall.
