John Erikson and his son Carl won the USTA Super-Senior Father-Son Clay Court Championships on Friday afternoon in Sarasota, Florida.
John and Carl, who are both members of the Oberlin College Heisman Club Hall of Fame, won three matches in the tournament after earning a first-round bye to win the title. This is the fourth national title for the father-son combo.
On Wednesday in the quarterfinals, the Eriksons made short work of Eric and Stanley Quade by winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Thursday morning they followed suit by knocking off Keith and Mark Hostetler by back-to-back scores of 6-3.
In the finals, the Eriksons upended Jack and Joseph Biedenham of Vero Beach, Florida, with identical 6-1 counts.
To be eligible to play in the Super Senior Division, the father must be at least 70 years old.
John, who graduated from Oberlin in 1961, was inducted into the Heisman Club Hall of Fame in 1989 and served as the organization's president from 2004-2006.
Carl, a 1994 Oberlin graduate, is one of the most decorated tennis players to ever don the crimson and gold. He was a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and two-time NCAA All-American. He was named NCAC Player of the Year in 1993 and 1994, earning all-conference first-team honors four times. He complied a career record of 95-19 in singles play and was 76-14 in doubles play.
